The Day After Podcast with Jeffery Austin: Winter 2021 Premiere Week

Published On January 2, 2021 » By »

Guess who’s back in the house? Usually my cohost, Voice Season 9 finalist Jeffery Austin, and I wait until the big marquee singing shows (American Idol and/or The Voice) are back in season before we start up a new season of “The Day After.” But we just couldn’t stay (or sashay) away. It’s a new year, new Ru, and we’re still stuck inside, just like we were for most of 2020, so we’ve decided to get an early start by celebrating New Year’s Day with our own virtual drag brunch: a lively discussion of the RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 13 premiere.

Like many reality competitions during the COVID era, Drag Race looks different this time around. (Side note: It seems there will be guest judges this season, though sadly no Rob Halford, and there will be an Untucked after all — but Jeffery and I weren’t able to watch Untucked before we recorded this week.) So join Jeffery and myself, live from the Porkchop Loading Dock, as we assess the 13 queens of Season 13 and the six (yes, SIX!) surprise lip-syncs of the premiere episode. We also predict which queen will get the “Porkchop” when this week’s premiere cliffhanger is resolved next Friday, and we chat a bit about The Masked Dancer too – because we have to support original American Idol judge Paula Abdul’s triumphant return to Fox television, right?

Speaking of which, American Idol will return on Feb. 14 (on ABC, with Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan), so now we have confirmed 2021 Valentine’s Day plans. Until then, Jeffery and I will be spreading the love by recapping RuPaul’s Drag Race, Drag Race U.K. (which starts again on Jan. 14), The Masked Dancer, and maybe even The Masked Singer U.K. (if I can convince Jeffery to watch that one). Special thanks to our Season 6 American Idol pals Blake Lewis and Brandon Rogers for our funky theme song, and if you prefer the written word, check out my Voice, Drag Race, American Idol, Songland, America’s Got TalentMasked Singer, and Masked Dancer articles on Yahoo Entertainment here.

Happy Ru Year, everyone!
