American Idol Season 19 has come to an end, and my co-host, The Voice Season 9 finalist Jeffery Austin, and I are celebrating this great season with our own “The Day After” very grand finale… by welcoming the champion of one of the best Idol seasons ever, the one and only David Cook, to the show to share his thoughts!

We get into everything – Chayce Beckham’s win, Casey Bishop’s surprise defeat, Arthur Gunn’s sudden Comeback return (and even more sudden exit), how live voting has changed the game, the art of a proper cover song, etc. And of course, we get into lots of awesome Season 7 stuff — including memories of Mariah Carey, Dolly Parton, “Hello,” “Billie Jean,” “Hungry Like the Wolf,” David vs. David, working with Rickey Minor, and much, much more — and David’s upcoming tour with the winner of the other best Idol season ever, Kris Allen. David and Jeffery also compare notes about their respective reality-TV runs.

And then, since David is admirably “brand-loyal” to Idol, in the second half of this podcast Jeffery and I excuse him, so we can chat on our own about this week’s epic Voice Season 20 finale. Plus, of course, The Masked Singer and RuPaul’s Drag Race All-Stars 6 are briefly discussed, and we explore a magical, alternate, Sliding Doors-style universe in which Jeffery could/should have won The Voice.

Many, many thanks to David Cook for his wisdom, humor, and candor, and thanks again to our American Idol Season 6 pals Blake Lewis and Brandon Rogers for our funky “The Day After” theme song. Jeffery and I will be back in the fall to dish about The Voice Season 21 with new coach Ariana Grande; in the meantime, check out my American Idol, The Voice, Masked Singer, America’s Got Talent, and RuPaul’s Drag Race articles on Yahoo Entertainment here.

The Voice Season 20 and American Idol Season 19 are soon coming to an end; in less than a week’s time, either Cam Anthony, Kenzie Wheeler, Rachel Mac, Jordan Matthew Young, or Victor Solomon will be new Voice champ ,and Grace Kinstler, Chayce Beckham, or Willie Spencer will be the next American Idol. Sadly, my favorites Corey Ward and Casey Bishop are respectively out of the running on those two shows, but I am looking forward to both finales nonetheless.

My “The Day After” cohost Jeffery Austin is looking forward to one of those finales. If you’re one of our regular podcast listeners, then you can probably already guess which one.

But before the seasons wrap up, there’s a lot to unpack about the Voice top nine and Idol top four shows, and Jeffery and I are here to break it all down. See you next week for our own “The Day After” spring 2021 season finale (which will also include a bit of Masked Singer discussion), and in the meantime, check out my American Idol, The Voice, Masked Singer, and RuPaul’s Drag Race articles on Yahoo Entertainment here.

And thanks, as always, to our American Idol Season 6 pals Brandon Rogers and Blake Lewis for our funky “The Day After” theme song.

Man… my “The Day After” cohost Jeffery Austin and I go away for two weeks, and all hell breaks loose.

The Voice actually gets good in its last two weeks of Season 20, Blake Shelton throws shade at the show, and we find out that next year The Voice will air only once a year (best news EVER!).

And then over in the American Idol world, Arthur Gunn controversially comes back, Arthur Gunn controversially ruins Chris Martin’s song, Arthur Gunn leaves again, Caleb Kennedy leaves under controversial circumstances, Chris Martin does a great job mentoring, Grace Kinstler has her best week yet, Casey Bishop has her worst week yet, and we find out that old contestants will eligible try to try for future Idol seasons.

And on top of all that, Hanson were revealed on The Masked Singer… but we knew it was them when the first note came out of the Russian Dolls’ creepy-but-cute animatronic mouths.

Phew! It was a lot. And Jeffery and I are here to discuss it all. Sorry for the delay, but I assure you, we make up for lost time. And despite our flakiness, we will be back next week to discuss all these of these shows one more time before their finales. In the meantime, you can check out my American Idol, The Voice, Masked Singer, and RuPaul’s Drag Race articles on Yahoo Entertainment here, and thanks as always to our American Idol pals Brandon Rogers and Blake Lewis for our funky “The Day After” theme song.

Once again, there’s a ton to discuss this week. We had the RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 13 finale and disappointing “reunion” show, an even more disappointing (and unnecessary) “Comeback” show featuring a bunch of randos from American Idol Season 18 competing for a spot on Season 19, unnecessary post-performance meltdown from Idol contestant Hunter Metts, and even a Bobby Brown reveal on The Masked Singer.

So this week, my “The Day After” cohost Jeffery Austin and I discuss all of that, along with our usual sidebars about the greatest all-time Drag Race lewks; that time Jeffery forgot the words to a Taylor Swift song in front of Taylor Swift’s mom; that time Jeffery swallowed his pride and Fort Worth Pride; the hotness of Chayce Beckham and Hunter Metts; the uselessness of Bobby Bones; the mystery of Katy Perry’s supposed lazy eye; Jordan Matthew Young’s glorious head of hair; and Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga‘s Best Original Song chances at the 2021 Oscars,

Oh yeaaah… and we also get into the Knockout Rounds of The Voice Season 20, focusing as much as we can on the positive: Mega-Mentor Snoop Dogg’s fantastic coaching and Pia Renee’s fantastic rendition of “What the World Needs Now.”

American Idol is dark till May 2, Drag Race Down Under doesn’t start till May 1, and I can’t seem to get Jeffery to regularly watch The Masked Singer, so we will return when the Forth is with us again on May 4. Until then, you can check out my American Idol, The Voice, Masked Singer, and Drag Race articles on Yahoo Entertainment here, and thanks as always to our American Idol pals Brandon Rogers and Blake Lewis for our funky “The Day After” theme song.

There’s a TON to discuss this week, just about the first three minutes of Monday’s American Idol top 12 show, the first live episode of Season 19, when it was announced that Luke Bryan couldn’t be on the set due to a positive COVID-19 test and was being replaced at the last minute by the judge who’s forever our girl, Paula Abdul.

Then Ryan Seacrest announced that frontrunner Wyatt Pike had mysteriously dropped out for “personal reasons.”

And then we found all those rumors about a comeback round with Season 18 contestants were true, and that someone from last season (mostly likely the unfairly advantaged Arthur Gunn) will be joining this season’s top nine.

It was a lot to unpack. And on this week’s episode of “The Day After,” my co-host Jeffery Austin and I unpack all of that, along with our recaps of this week’s combined 28 Idol performances and three eliminations. Plus, we get into the final Battle Rounds of The Voice Season 20, my latest Masked Singer guesses, and a Bachelor sidebar… because it wouldn’t be a proper episode of “The Day After” without a tangent or two.

It’s Jeffery’s birthday today, so what better way to show him you care than by listening to two whole hours of his reality chatter? Thank you for listening, and thanks to our American Idol pals Brandon Rogers and Blake Lewis for our funky “The Day After” theme song.
After taking a mini-hiatus so my cohost Jeffery Austin could move to Nashville and become neighbors with Kris Allen, David Cook, and Paul McDonald, “The Day After” is finally back to catch up on all things American Idol and Voice.

For the latter show, we discuss the bombshell announcement of Ariana Grande joining the Season 21 coaching panel, the also-surprising addition of substitute coach Kelsea Ballerini while Kelly Clarkson sat out this week’s Battle Rounds, and the Voice Season 20 Battles so far — all with varying degrees of excitement. And for Idol, we get into this week’s Final Judgment/Showstoppers/Green Mile round, and look ahead to next week’s celebrity duets. We’re a bit more excited about all stuff, unsurprisingly.

Now that we are back on track, “The Day After” will returning to its regular scheduled programming next week for more The Voice and American Idol chatter, with hopefully a few sidebars for The Masked Singer and RuPaul’s Drag Race. In the meantime, thanks as always to our Idol pals Brandon Rogers and Blake Lewis for our funky “The Day After” theme song, and if you prefer the written word, check out my American Idol, The Voice, Masked Singer, and Drag Race articles on Yahoo Entertainment here.

It was a packed reality-TV week, as Hanson and Kermit the Frog made their debuts on a “game-changing season” of The Masked Singer, we found out the final four on RuPaul’s Drag Race U.K., the United Kingdolls announced their summer concert tour, Denali was controversially told to skate/sashay away on RuPaul’s Drag Race U.S., and on/off Voice coach Gwen Stefani released a charming new single, “Slow Clap.”

This week, my “The Day After” co-host, The Voice Team Gwen finalist Jeffery Austin, and I get into all of that. But we mainly stick to what those who still listen to this podcast really want to hear: discussion of The Voice Season 20 and American Idol Season 19. While we are little more excited about one of those shows than the other (regular “The Day After” listeners can easily guess which one), there’s plenty of chatter about both.

And of course, we take our usual conversational detours, covering Yngvie Malmsteen, bad TikTok habits, Hollywood stereotypes, Family Ties, Jeffery’s Season 9 Voice run, Jeffery’s multiple American Idol auditions, Katy Perry’s underrated Smile album, and Blake Shelton’s old reality series Nashville Star. <Slow clap>

Speaking of Nashville, Jeffery is moving there next week, so we are taking next weekend off and will be back in two weeks’ time. But this super-sized episode should tide you over until then. In the meantime, thanks as always to our American Idol pals Brandon Rogers (whose vocals can be heard on the new Coming 2 America soundtrack!) and Blake Lewis for our funky “The Day After” theme song, and if you prefer the written word, check out my Drag Race, American Idol, The Voice, Songland, America’s Got Talent, Masked Singer, and Masked Dancer articles on Yahoo Entertainment here.

This is The Voice…

Yes, this week my “The Day After” co-host, The Voice Season 9 top four finalist Jeffery Austin, and I are back to celebrate 10 years of The Voice, as the show’s 20th season premieres. Of course, it’s not much of a celebration, since we devote a great deal of this week’s podcast criticizing The Voice‘s failure to launch superstar careers over the past decade or showcase many superstar-potential singers this week. And then we move on to the shows we really want to talk about, American Idol and RuPaul’s Drag Race. It is what it is, and we said what we said.

But don’t worry, Voice fans! We are excited about a few contestants (Raine Stern, Victor Solomon, Zae Romeo, Cam Anthony) and returning coach Nick Jonas’s chances of winning this season. And there is plenty of nostalgic Season 9 talk, because no fewer than three of this week’s Voice hopefuls auditioned with songs Jeffery sang during his run on the show. Clearly Jeffery’s legacy and influence are still felt, 11 (wow, ELEVEN???) seasons later.

And of course, we take our usual conversational detours, covering everything from The Real World (not just the new Paramount+ reboot, but the Miami, London, Paris, Seattle, and San Francisco seasons of the ’90s), to Nokia clamshell phones and the old IdolVote iPhone 3 app, to Nick Jonas’s solo career, to my crush on future Drag Race U.K. winner and my future spouse, Bimini Bon Boulash. (“Lyndsey Bon Boulash” does have a nice ring to it.)

Thanks, as always, to our American Idol pals Brandon Rogers (whose vocals can be heard on the new Coming 2 America soundtrack!) and Blake Lewis for our funky “The Day After” theme song. Next week, Jeffery and I will be back to talk more Idol, Voice, and, if I can convince Jeffery to add one more TV show to his viewing queue, The Masked Singer Season 5. In the meantime, if you prefer the written word, check out my Drag Race, American Idol, The Voice, Songland, America’s Got Talent, Masked Singer, and Masked Dancer articles on Yahoo Entertainment here.

Kieran, dim the lights. Thisssss…. is American Idol!

Yes, this week my “The Day After” co-host, Jeffery Austin, and I have left the Pork Chop Loading Dock — at least temporarily — to shift our focus from RuPaul’s Drag Race and deep-dive into the first two episodes of American Idol Season 19. (Sorry, ABC — we refuse to call it “American Idol Season 4.” We’d never disrespect Carrie, Bo, and Constantine like that!) Of course, when our obsessions with singing competitions and drag competitions eventually, gloriously combine on the new Paramount+ streaming service’s Queen of the Universe (clearly the show Idol‘s Ada Vox or The Voice‘s Chris “Nedra Belle” Weaver should have competed on in the first place!), we will devote entire podcasts to that, which will probably draw even fewer listeners than our recent Drag Race discussions. But for now, there is plenty to discuss Idol-wise to please the core “Day After” audience.

After addressing the elephant (or donkey, depending on which political party/Conway family member you align with) in the audition room, by discussing the intense backlash to Claudia Conway’s controversial Idol appearance, Jeffery and I get into this season’s early abundance of talent — from the Motley Crue-approved Casey Bishop to the next-level Willie Spence. And along the way, we take our usual conversational detours, to cover the unjust erasure of last year’s Idol winner Just Sam; what went wrong with The Four; what continues to go wrong with The Voice; the supreme confidence of Caleb Johnson and Taylor Hicks; why the hell Yurisbel got a Golden Ticket this week but Ace Stiles did not; who really won that catwalk-off with German Speedo model Mario Adrion; and Jeffery’s exciting next career move.

And, speaking of next career moves… how do I get to be a judge on Queen of the Universe???? Someone start a Change.org petition or something and make that happen, pretty please. That is my new neon dream.

Thanks, as always, to our American Idol pals Blake Lewis and Brandon Rogers for our funky “Day After” theme song. Next week, Jeffery and I will be back to talk more Idol, recap The Voice Season 20 premiere, and, time willing, make a quick pit stop at the Pork Chop Loading Dock for a bit of Drag Race chat. In the meantime, if you prefer the written word, check out my Drag Race, American Idol, The Voice, Songland, America’s Got Talent, Masked Singer, and Masked Dancer articles on Yahoo Entertainment here.
