For my latest Pollstar cover story, I chatted with notorious punk/post-punk icon John Lydon for over 90 minutes. The artist formerly known as Johnny Rotten is always unfiltered, of course, but in this surprisingly good-spirited Pollstar interview, he really opened up, not just about touring and making new music at age 70, but about his half-century love story with Nora Forster; his childhood illness and other near-brush with death; his friendships with Keith Levene and the misunderstood Sid Vicious; what he really thinks about the Sex Pistols’ Lydon-less reunion; the one PiL song that makes him cry onstage and the one he fears he won’t be able to power through at all; the legacy of his 1984 rap/rock cult hit “Time Zone”; the Pistols’ famous 1976 Manchester gig that changed rock history; and much, much, more.

It is always a pleasure to speak with one of my favorite people, the one-and-only Mr. Adam Lambert. But I was especially excited this time to interview him for my first Pollstar cover story, about my favorite album of his since 2012′s history-making Trespassing.

Adam’s sixth solo album is his most personal yet, so it is simply titled ADAM — because this man has paid his dues, time after time, so he needs no further introduction. The singer, actor, style-setter, and greatest American Idol alumnus of all time opened up about the album, including the major life changes and the ’90s electronica of his angst-ridden youth that inspired it; obsolete industry gatekeepers; double-standards about sexiness for male (especially queer male) and female pop stars; how he finally learned to “un-neuter” himself and “give less of a fuck” about what people think; performing solo vs. performing with Queen; and what to expect from his upcoming solo tour.
