Casual listeners could be forgiven for mistaking DMA’S for a British band. The NME even practically declared them The New Oasis. (Noel Gallagher wasn’t quite so impressed, but let’s face it: Getting slammed by Noel is a rite of passage and a badge of honor.) However, DMA’s actually hail from far-flung Sydney, Australia. And while they’re fine with the Britpop comparisons, they insist, “Obviously, we have lots of other influences.”

“We’ve always been big folk fans,” the trio’s Matt Mason says, sitting on an Austin porch after performing a stripped-down South by Southwest session for Yahoo Music. “[Bandmate] Johnny took and I used to be in a bluegrass band together. We both played the dobro, banjo; Johnny had a mandolin. So I think there’s a big folk influence.”

“I grew up listening to a lot of Dylan and Credence and Neil Young, and stuff like that,” Took adds, although he says by high school, he had Primal Scream, Stone Roses, and of course Oasis in high rotation.

Despite the elder Gallagher brother dis, DMA’S (whose lineup is rounded out by frontman Tommy O’Dell) have been embraced in the U.K. But now it’s time for them to start all over and launch an Australian invasion in the USA.

“When we play in England or Australia, the shows are very consistent with the turnout that we have. But here [in America], we’ll have a sold-out show, and then we’ll go to the next state and there’ll be no one there,” laughs Mason, describing the band’s U.S. touring experience so far.

“I like it!” insists Took. “It’s a bit of a challenge… going to back to playing little clubs and whatnot. It’s a bit of an incentive to work harder and get some hours on the road.”
