Watch Hemming Perform at Linda Perry’s Studio

If Hemming looks familiar to you, congratulations: You’re one of the wise few that tuned in to VH1’s excellent and underrated Make or Break: The Linda Perry Project, the rawest and realest talent competition on television.

Hemming, aka Philly indie-rocker Candice Martello, first appeared on the show as one-half of the punk duo Omar — but once Perry recognized Martello’s gift for confessional singer-songwriter fare, she advised Martello to go solo. Martello took that advice and ended up co-winning the show, landing a record deal with Perry’s recently rebooted Custard label. Now rechristened Hemming, Martello just released her self-titled debut album and is about hit the road as the opening act on Chris Cornell’s acoustic tour.

Yahoo Music’s Reality Rocks recently caught up with Martello in Los Angeles at Perry’s famous Kung Fu Gardens studio compound, where much of Make or Break was filmed and Hemming was recorded. There, she played three new unplugged tracks and dished about working with Perry, drunk-live-tweeting Make or Break, and freaking out over Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun” music video when she was a little kid.

While Martello is still far from a typical TV star, making it very clear that she’ll never appear on another reality show, she has clearly gotten used to the whirlwind lifestyle of a Linda Perry-mentored recording artist since she got that out-of-the-blue phone call last year.
